Today is a very sad day for fans of forward thinking, heavy underground music. The mighty Hydra Head Records is officially shuttering it’s doors.  I’ve been a fan since they released Cave In's Until Your Heart Stops 2xLP (which I bought for $9 at Atomic Records, based solely on the cover art and song titles) I also got (through tour managing ISIS, another sadly missed forward thinking heavy act) to know Aaron and Mark. I’m glad I got to know them. I feel very lucky that I was able to not only meet people who I found inspiring, but to call them as friends as well.
HHR was the only label where I’d buy just about everything released. Even the bands that I wasn’t in love with, I still got their appeal to Mark and Aaron. With the recording industry steadily circling the drain, I am not surprised at HHR’s demise, but I honestly had hope that they would keep afloat with their superior packaging, strong as steel taste in bands, and the fact that they’ve been releasing amazing hardcore, metal and “challenging” music for almost 2 decades. I suppose all good things must come to an end (much like Mark’s beard earlier this year). That doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it. I can only hope that another great label will fill the void (seemingly) left by the death of HHR. I’m looking at you Gilead Media. You can read the statement from Aaron here… http://www.hydraheadlines.blogspot.com/
Looking at the release list on their Wikipedia page, it’s really unbelievable how many rock solid releases they have unleashed over the years….Mare, Sunn O))), Cave In, Botch, Discordance Axis, Khlyst, Torche, Jesu, Old Man Gloom, Cavity, Coalesce, etc.
You can buy some super cheap bundles here http://www.realtomatoketchup.com/or here http://www.bluecollardistro.com/hydrahead/categories.php?cPath=4
Anyhow, I’d just like to say a big thank you to Aaron, Mark, Sugar Bear, James and all the other HHR employees that helped keep my ears happy all these years. Thank you for helping me scratch that itch that only uncommon, smart, progressive heavy music can reach.
